PSFRD stands for the Private Security Firms Regulatory Department. It is the regulatory authority overseeing private security operations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This department serves as the umbrella organization for all private security companies operating within the country.

The regulation of security companies providing guarding services in the six Emirates—Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain—falls under PSFRD’s jurisdiction.

Evolution fo PSFRD in United Arab Emirates

Before it became known as the PSFRD, the regulatory authority for private security in the UAE was referred to by different names:

  1. PSBD: Private Security Business Department
  2. PSCOD: Private Security Company Organization Department
  3. ASSD: Auxiliary Security Services Department

Each of these previous entities contributed to what is now the PSFRD.

Formation and Structure

The PSFRD was established in 2002 as a unit of the Abu Dhabi Police, forming part of the Ministry of Interior. Initially focused on Abu Dhabi, the department has since expanded into a federal entity, encompassing the entire UAE. The department’s workforce is a mix of police officers and civilian staff, with offices spread across various Emirates.

Responsibilities of PSFRD

The PSFRD has a broad range of responsibilities, including:

1. Stabilizing Security Regulatory Standards: Ensuring uniformity in security practices across the UAE.
2. Approving Security Companies and Guards: Vetting and authorizing security companies and personnel.
3. Ensuring Quality Training and Standards: Overseeing training programs to maintain high standards.
4. Examining and Licensing: Conducting examinations and issuing licenses to security companies and guards.
5. Inspecting Compliance: Regular inspections of security companies and guards to ensure adherence to federal laws.
6. Enforcing Private Security Laws: Imposing fines and prosecuting violations through continuous monitoring and review.

Becoming a Security Guard in the UAE?

If you’re interested in becoming a security guard in the UAE, here are the steps you need to follow:

1. Get a Security Guard Job: You can be hired by a security company in the UAE either through a recruitment process in your home country or directly within the UAE.
2. Complete Security Guard Training: Once hired, your employer will send you for training at the National Security Institute (NSI). If you haven’t been hired yet, you can independently enroll in NSI’s Basic Security Guard Training.
3. Take the PSFRD Test: After completing your training, your employer will arrange for you to take the PSFRD exam. You can also apply for the test on your own.
4. Apply for a Security Guard License: Upon passing the PSFRD test, you can apply for your license, which may take a few days to issue.
5. Start Your Security Guard Job: If you’ve already secured a job, you can begin working immediately after receiving your license. If not, you can start looking for job opportunities in the UAE with your new PSFRD license.
6. Renew Your License: Every two years, you must attend refresher training at the NSI and renew your security guard license.
